While Karen Vermeren has been to the North of Iceland in August 2014, the Bárðarbunga volcano became active. For two weeks, the magma searched a way out under the glacier Vatnajökull, accompanied by a series of earthquakes. Finally the magma started to escape behind the ice. This caused a lot of phenomena; from the black lava stones via the smog of yellow sulphur dioxide to the melting ice cap and the red lava flow.
